Office advances public-private pacts 3 June 2024
The State Enterprise Policy Office (Sepo) plans to advance public-private partnership (PPP) projects worth nearly 47 billion baht this year. PPP investments will reduce the government's fiscal burden. As of February, 18 billion baht in PPP projects for Laem Chabang Port were approved, with an additional 10 billion baht expected by June.
Notable upcoming projects include a cruise terminal on Koh Samui. The PPP Committee evaluates projects for environmental impact and public service charges, and has updated the joint investment plan to 135 projects worth 1.19 trillion baht, aiming to improve public services and transport systems.
Investors from 3 nations eye Land Bridge 31 May 2024
Major companies from China, Japan, and the Netherlands expressed interest in Thailand’s 1-trillion-baht Land Bridge project during a market sounding event. Key participants included OOCL Logistics, K Line, China Harbour Engineering, Evergreen Container Terminal, and others. The Land Bridge will connect ports in Chumphon and Ranong with a new highway and railway.
The project requires a sole investor, possibly a consortium, to invest 1 trillion baht. Feedback from investors will inform the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) bill, expected to pass before international bidding begins in late 2024. The project will be implemented in four phases under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Laem Chabang Port Phase 3 PPP under EEC development plan update 31 May 2024
Laem Chabang Port Phase 3 update: Land reclamation by CNNC will finish by June, GPC to start F1 terminal construction, expected by 2025, with the project set to complete by 2026. China Harbour Engineering won the infrastructure bid pending appeal. Additional bids for railway and cargo equipment, worth over 3 billion baht, will open soon. This 114-billion-baht EEC plan aims to boost container capacity, rail transport, and vehicle handling, enhancing trade.
PSA, PIL test low-carbon end-to-end shipment 29 May 2024
PSA Singapore (PSA) and Pacific International Lines (PIL) have successfully tested a low-carbon end-to-end shipment, part of their green supply chain initiative under a MoU signed in October 2023. The pilot study involved transporting goods from Singapore to Chongqing using biofuel aboard PIL’s vessel Kota Ratna and PSA’s green port practices.
The biofuel blend used reduced carbon emissions by 84.1%, equivalent to planting 4000 trees. PIL aims to use insights from this trial to further reduce emissions from its fleet, including new LNG dual-fuel container vessels to be delivered starting late 2024. PSA utilized container barging and eco-friendly equipment at ports, aligning with its commitment to combat climate change.
